Life After: The Arising
by Bryan Way

In a scientific and spiritual sense, humanity has its world ordered, but that order slowly descends into chaos when something defies the tenets of both, leaving the events of human history divided into life before and life after the bodies of the dead began to reanimate. College student Jeff Grey comes home to be confronted by something he'd only read about in fiction and seen in movies: Zombies. Despite lungs beset by asthma and a total lack of survival skills, his lifelong desire to endure an undead apocalypse sees him unite a small group of acquaintances, but with the town quarantined as emergency infrastructure breaks down, Jeff and the rest of the survivors will have to grow up fast if they want to see a life after the arising.

Robin's Review:

Jeff and his girlfriend, Julia are survivors of an apocalyptic event that creates zombies. They and others are left to find their way in this new and dangerous dystopian world. This story take place over a 10-day period with the survivors moving from the high school they were hiding in, to different locations that are supposed to be Rescue Centers.

The plot was interesting and entertaining. It had a lot of good survival ideas.

Favorite Lines:

Becoming undead, by definition, is the removal of that soul, and your survival largely depends on how you cope with that concept.”

Smart Lines:

“Okay, keep breathing slow… we have three options… go back out, run, or stay put…”

“Okay… think about it this way…” I start. “Outside, you have no control other than where you plan on going and how you plan to get there. There’s no safe, just safer.”

“Light bulbs? “Shatter them… if anyone comes up the steps, we’ll hear the glass break.”

“Alright… no one ever goes anywhere alone, no excuses. There’s a lot of us up here, so if you have to go anywhere… groups of three.”

“Why would they go slow, they’re human beings who are like, sick or something, right?” Melody asks. “Rigor mortis? That’s my best guess…”

“So, it affects the brain, right? What if that’s all that happens? If you don’t actually die, there’s no reason for rigor mortis to set in.”

Liminality (The Ancient Ones Trilogy Book 2)
by Cassandra L. Thompson

Artistically Outstanding!

Picking up right where The Ancient Ones left off, David has just discovered the diabolical brother he left for dead in 15th century Romania has returned. Making matters even stranger, the news is delivered by his old friend, Danulf, the half-vampyre/half-lycanthrope he had also presumed dead. As Dan divulges his story to David and his newly reanimated lover, Morrigan, it becomes clear that the ancient pagan god’s history hoped to forget are back.

Another adventure throughout history, from the Carpathian Mountains to Pre-Revolutionary France, the story unfolds to reveal there is a much bigger problem than just the vainglorious Lucius. Even with the addition of a liminal witch named Cahira, the gods find themselves facing a threat that can erase their existence for good. Wrought with adventure, romance, tragedy, and heartache, the second book in The Ancient Ones Trilogy dives deeper into a tale as old as time itself... that bites.
Robin's Review:

I usually summarize the book in my reviews, but I can’t with this one because I do not want to ruin the experience for anyone. Because you know, you can never get that back. It’s what I like to call “love at first read”. You would give anything to read a book like it’s the first time. This book heck this series is like that. “Sigh”

Excite
by Erica Damon

One pill starts a party; how many make a nightmare? Jon is just another dissertation student until the hypothetical drug that he and his partner Isaac are working on turns into a real pill. Except it doesn't do quite what they intended. When they realize that it has the potential to be the next great party drug they are split. Jon's girlfriend Kat is pushing him to take it to the streets, but his partner wants nothing to do with it. Isaac just wants to finish their thesis. But Jon can never say no to Kat and together they start showing the little pink pill off at parties. The drug spreads like wildfire through the college campus. It’s almost too easy; the demand keeps rising, the money flows in, and the parties are getting bigger. Can they keep it together or will chasing the high bring them crashing down?
Robin's Review:

This is an interesting and entertaining story about a drug called Excite, how and why it comes into being, and the science of it but also the consequences of it. It was fast paced and easy to read. The plot was well thought out and descriptive. The characters were flawed but relatable. All in all, a good read.

No Bones About It

No Bones About It (Flint & Co Paranormal Investigations Book 1)
by Rachel Ford

He’s a skeleton who used to be a cop. I’m a Freak who used to be a detective. Together, we’re going to find the woman I love.

Technically, the PD hasn’t fired me yet. But when my girlfriend, the star witness in the biggest embezzlement case in a century, went missing, I stepped on some toes. And maybe busted a senior detective’s nose.

He had it coming. He’s hiding something. I’m going to find out what, and I’m going to find my fiancée. But I can’t do it alone.

In a world of magic and undead beings, Normies avoid Freaks like me like the plague. Our magic terrifies them.

But there’s one place I know I can turn to find the help I need: the undead. So here I am, trusting the fate of my career and the love of my life to the bony hands of a 150-year-old undead investigator.

And that's a recipe for disaster. No bones about it.

My Review:

August 13th, 2030, twelve minutes after nine a meteor hit New Boston. It wasn’t the end of the world. It was just the end of life as we knew it. All over the planet, the dead returned to life, or undeath, or whatever they call it. For the most part, and for most people effected, the impact had been positive: gained abilities, a second life, and so on.

That being said Detective Jill Wallace gifted with clairvoyance and fire magic was investigating her missing fiancée, Natalie Lyons with the help of former cop, private investigator and skeleton “Flinty” Jack. But Chief Anders and Detective Sean O’Donnell believe no crime was committed and Detective Wallace is losing her stuff even though Natalie was set to testify in the Senator Vandermeer son’s embezzlement case.

What a delightfully amusing story full of unusual and fun characters. The world building was fantastic going above and beyond the apocalyptic event. In this dystopian world, we find out how things have changed, meet the brilliantly smart, strong characters, and become immersed in their lives. Fabulous throughout, the story had me wanting more by the end.

This is the first book in the series, and I have to say I can’t wait for next book to see where Rachel Ford goes with the story.

Favorite lines:

“I’m a rationalist. A man of science. As I exist in the natural world, my state is not an unnatural or supernatural one.”

“As I exist in the natural world, my state is not an unnatural or supernatural one.”

“I mean, uh…well, I can shoot fireballs from my fingertips. I’m not sure what you would call that, except magic?” “A weaponized exothermal chemical process,” he said, with a shrug of his shoulder blades. “Yeah, that really rolls off the tongue.” “An‘ability,’ if you prefer brevity. That seems to be all the rage these days. But I take your meaning: you’re a Freak.”

“I’d learned long ago to sort problems into two very useful categories, and act accordingly: my problems, and someone else’s problems.” “This was a him problem, not a me problem. So, I could feel free to ignore it.”

“Flinty Jack, you sentient Halloween ornament, what the hell are you doing calling me at this ungodly hour?”

“Keep an eye on that bone bag, will you? He’s a real pain in the ass, but I’d be sorry if he got his irritating self-killed.”

“Flesh Sack, Breather, Skin Bag, Freak, Bone Bag, Normies, Undead and Ferals.”

Chronicles of the Undead
by A.F. Stewart

Three generations bound together under a horrifying family secret.
Vampires exist.
Inside the personal journals of the Harrington family, watch a dark and dangerous odyssey unfold. Three members of this tormented family, Samuel, his son Edmund, and Edmund's daughter Charlotte, must come to terms with evil. Set during the 18th and 19th century in London, England, this family must struggle against horror as their lives intersect with supernatural forces. As two intriguing vampires befriend, manipulate, and play with all three souls, altering their lives forever.
Their fears, private confidences and weaknesses are revealed as one selfish act ends in horrific tragedy, with far-reaching consequences. Who succumbs to the seduction and danger of the vampire? Who grapples to combat the evil influence that permeates their lives? Find out in Chronicles of the Undead.
My Review:

This story is told through diary entries of:
Samuel Harrington, Father, 1793-1795, London, England
Edmund Harrington, Son, 1795-1797, London, England
Charlotte Harrington, Daughter, 1825-1826, London, England
…about the involvement of Henri Forain, and the cousin, Eleanor de Burgh.

This was an easy and quick read with a sinister link between these family members and vampires. As diary entries it would seem far removed but it wasn’t. I felt the emotions the writer felt while they put their information down in the diary.
Trigger warnings:
Infidelity, Domestic Violence, Prostitution, Death, Sacrifice

Taken: A Detective Al Warner Novel
(Detective Al Warner Suspense Book 6)
by George A Bernstein

The corpse of a Miami hooker is discovered in the Everglades, and Detective Al Warner is on it. He discovers other streetwalkers have disappeared, and a simple homicide is now a case of human trafficking. Nicki, a female undercover cop, goes on the streets, hoping to be snatched so she can use a concealed tracking device, but it’s taken from her before she can activate it.

Maggie is offered a lucrative deal as a birth surrogate for a secret, wealthy couple. She’ll live nine months in managed seclusion. Another surrogate there disappears a month before her term. Maggie learns her fetus is a tool of extortion, and fears for her life. She attempts to flee the mansion, but her “hosts” refuse to let her go. Her life is trivial, but they need the child she carries.

Trapped at the bordello on a remote ’Glades Island reached only by airboats, Nicki embarks on daring foray to find and activate the tracker. If she fails, she’ll become a sex slave like the other women imprisoned there, with little hope of rescue. Warner and his team eagerly await Nicki’s signal. Without that, there’s no clue to her location, and no idea of the deadly confrontation that awaits them. Warner is thrust into danger as he seeks to free the sex slaves and also rescue Maggie and a second infant before it’s too late. Lives are on the line, and only Al Warner can save them.

My Review:
This was a story with some of the previous characters from the other books in this series
coming back to help the main character to investigate missing and murdered women.

While being well thought out it was written with a male’s point of view concerning the sex slavery of women. Showing no empathy and or emotion to describe the characters past their looks, left me wanting more. There were a few prejudices that came through in the telling of the story and I was unsure whether they were the authors own prejudices or the characters.

How much is one willing to sacrifice for the sake of freedom?

For fans of the Otherworld, Ready Player One, and Legion series comes a mind-altering, action-packed story of dark realization, betrayal, and ultimate human sacrifice in the name of science.
Echo Turner, abandoned daughter of a deranged man, has lived within isolation for a crime she's not allowed to remember.

And she wants out.

Except she can't leave, but not because of the rising toxicity levels and hungry wolves that roam outside of her perceived protection. She can't know her world isn't real, and the program resets anytime she's made aware of its false reality.

Clyde Jackson made it his mission to secure the sanctity of humanity once Doctor Wyatt took over his parents' program. Through many successes, came one difficult case. It wasn't until later he learned the horrifying truth that was kept from them all.

NXT is about the mind-altering adventure of Echo Turner as she battles for freedom in a near-future world designed for rebuilding one's sanity. Worse still, it is rather used to psychologically torture, hunt, and prey upon anyone who has entered this inescapable prison. Many don't survive... Many more won't...

"Otherworld" meets "Ready Player One". This cutting-edge Cyberpunk Thriller is a unique blend of innovative Science Fiction, nail-biting Suspense, and a splash of Mystery. Perfect for fans of ideological concepts, virtual worlds, and near-possible futuristic technologies.

My name is Kyara, and I am a banshee.

My job? Bringing the dead to the other side.

I expected to become a healer...
…But fate bestowed me with a curse.

Cause, yeah. Being a Banshee is a curse.
I'm hated by my friends and family, and I'm kind of stuck in the Realm of Silver, the last place I want to be. But if I don't accept my job and take souls to their next stop, well, things will get bad fast. The wicked ones will drown the world in darkness, while the rest. I don’t even want to know.

What I really want is to gather the strength I need to become who I want to be.
Is it even possible to do my job with all this pressure from... everybody?

Prepare for an epic adventure!

My Review:
Kyara comes into her powers after turning sixteen. Thinking she was to become a healer, only to find out that she is something else is really hard on her and her relationships. This is really a fantastic coming of age story in a dystopian world setting. I really felt for Kyara as a character. To be different, bullied, and shunned is difficult to say the least. She had amazing growth and maturity that made this story a great read.
