Rules of the Game!

The world is broken. Decades after a catastrophic event wiped out all technology.
The ancients, had such unimaginable levels of technology, and screwed up so badly, losing everything. And then came the Faith, spreading like a plague, burning books, tearing down libraries, and smearing any trace of progress as apostasy.
Seventeen-year-old, Park Yuni-mi was on her way to becoming the most famous Rat in the City with the guidance of her mentor Kim Joon-woo. Then came the loss of Joon-woo, and with it the end of the life she’d known. The almost rape. Being sold like livestock and her first kill. Then there’s Private Baxter “Buck” Brennan, a fresh recruit in the religious Five Points Army, the confederation’s military. He is given a mysterious mission to the fabled City that leads him into the wasteland, beyond the Boundary. Add in a hauler, Rajan Gupta, The Rotten Can, working from a sprawling railroad empire called the Station, Captain Weinberg, Head of Locksville Intelligence Service. And finally, a prominent hierarchy made up of the Five Golden Dragons of the High Council of New Kowloon, a powerful trade house. Park and Buck become entangled in a geopolitical game.

Oh my! What fun! It has such an imaginative world built around machines. I cried, laughed, and screamed at and with the characters. This was an interesting book. I will reread to see if I missed anything this go round.

What if there is more to climate change than just the weather?

The centuries-old warnings of the Forest Prophets have fallen on deaf ears. Caorran, the capital city, has turned its back on the Forest, refusing to acknowledge the environmental crisis.

Join the investigative reporter and her cameraman, R’chelle and Jaco, as they search for the truth. Caorran is battered by devastating sandstorms, and public dissent is brutally stifled by silver-tongued Senator Adrán.

There’s a lot going on in this book, Kane’s descriptions throughout are deep and realistic, so much so that his description of the dirt and sand actually had me feeling gritty. The characters are easy to follow throughout and their interactions with each other are believable. Having heard so much banter on both sides of the climate change argument, makes this book quite interesting. I definitely recommend Darkwood as a good end of summer read.

The Tens
By Vanessa Jones

Every night since Sophie’s thirtieth birthday, she has been jolted out of her sleep by the same nightmare. The rock nightmare was so repetitive that sometimes Sophie yearned for any other kind of nightmare. It was always the same. Never changed. A nightmare she’d had since she was little. It started off infrequently. Perhaps four times a year when she was a teenager. Its frequency increased over the years, more so when she was stressed. Then, her husband inexplicably vanishes. Leaving only a note. But then she read the sparse words of Alex’s handwriting: I have to leave you. I’m so sorry.

It didn’t take long for Sophie to begin to plummet. It wasn't living alone that saw her change. Sometimes she doubted it was even the fact that the love of her life had abandoned her. It was as if something greater was happening to her. Something that had been threatening to break the banks her entire life, undulating underneath the surface of her skin and she had been clever and strong enough to keep it at bay, really well in fact, until now. Emotional distress had taken off a layer of her armor and now she was exposed without an inner barricade to keep back that torrent of emotional sludge.

Oh, my what a twisty turned book. I felt that the character, Sophia was going insane and I thought I was right there with her. I almost put the book down because hello creepy clown (my phobia), but I kept on reading it. I’m so glad I did. The ending is so twisted…it was a fantastic book. It was done well by Jones. I will read anything else she writes and go back and read anything she has written.

The Tens is a psychological thriller that tackles the theme of mysticism versus madness that won’t stop until you’ve uncovered the truth about Sophie…

Antonios Restraint: The Caretta Brothers by Denise T Ford

Maria is a kind and caring 1st year medical doctor with a past that continues to haunt her to this day. Because of physical and emotional abuse in the past her scars have shaped who she is. She is not ready for a relationship let alone have time for one.

Antonio is a handsome and arrogant playboy who has become tired of the lifestyle and the one-night stands. While visiting his brother in the hospital he runs into Maria, who is treating his brother after he’s been stabbed, she is gorgeous but won’t give him the time of day.

It will take incredible restraint and a good deal of patience for Antonio to break down Maria’s barriers, but also to gain her trust. Will Maria let him get close enough to love her, the way she truly deserves?

This isn’t just a love story, this is a story of healing, growing and empowerment with a connection between characters that grows stronger. The characters struggle with issues, that are very real in the world today. I was able to sympathize with Maria’s struggle and her ability to succeed.

In 2009, the body of five-year-old Daisy Prospero was found. Her killer has never been caught. Flash forward ten years and a cold case unit has formed to take another look at the case.

Chief Superintendent Lenny Howard asks Detective Chief Inspector Kath Fortune to head up the new cold case team. These team members that pour over the files, Detective Sergeant Ruth Goodwin, Detective Sergeant Shirley Thompson, Detective Constable Marvin Henshall, and Lane Petreus—a psychic who had helped them out on previous cases. Byron Lord has the civilian position with a degree in Computer Sciences & Technology. Justice for the dead and their families. That was all that mattered at the end of the day. That was what they all strived for: results and closure.

I absolutely loved this book. It had everything you need in a book through multiple genres. Action, yup. Mystery, yup. Thriller and crime, it’s in there. The characters and scenarios were realistic. I could not put this book down. I had to see how it ended. Of course, it ended with me out a night’s sleep, but oh well it was worth it.

Proximity (The ICHO Wars, Book 1)
by Kevin Alan

A Post-Apocalyptic story set somewhere in the future.

Former U.S. Army Special Forces operative, codenamed Bishop, a scientifically modified stealth soldier/mercenary is wanting to get out of this kind of life so he can be with his son. But before this can happen, he is captured and given an ultimatum by U.S. Army Director of Operations, Richard Ramar. The mission is to infiltrate and retrieve a secret weapon from a U.S. weapons facility taken over by terrorists in the Syrian desert.

In exchange for Bishop’s freedom and survival, Ramar makes two requests: assassinate the terrorist leader, and retrieve the weapon inside that facility before it changes mankind’s future… what little is left of it.

The world building was interesting and new. The characters were beautifully written but flawed which made them easy to sympathize with. It was action packed and exciting. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

If at any point in your journey…

The Rules of the Road, takes you on a writer's journey, connecting stories about strange encounters with a mysterious radio program that only some will hear. Buck Hensley and his radio show called “The Rules of the Road”.

When an amateur journalist encounters a mysterious radio program while driving alone one late night, he is presented with a set of instructions with potentially fatal consequences. After escaping with his life, obsession takes hold and he is determined to find out who is behind the broadcast and who else it has affected.

His investigation leads him to speak with all sorts of travelers each with their own haunting encounter with the phantom program. The “Rules” seemed to only affect those that heard corresponding and specific broadcast. If you haven’t heard the broadcast then you were in the clear or are you?

This book has every freaky scary thing you could think up. It’s beyond creepy.

I like how it has undertones of lessons with dark choices and scary outcomes. Mostly it was just plain exciting, so buckle up buttercup and prepare yourself for a thrilling read. So creepy, fun, and exhilarating that I don’t want to get in the car ever again. Fair enough.

Review of The Innkeeper on the Edge of Paris

A ghost, reincarnation, and love.

The Innkeeper on the Edge of Paris
by J. Schlenker

This is an interesting story line. A woman moves to France 3 years after a divorce. She is drawn to a centuries-old inn on the outskirts of Paris and begins having dreams about a woman who looks exactly like her but from the 1700s. This leads her to start solving the mystery about the woman. The mystery not only draws in the characters but also had me trying to figure things out along the way. She never expects her stay there will lead to a ghost, reincarnation, and love, not with a Frenchman, but a Scotsman named Daniel. The innkeeper, Claire, calls it destiny.

Paris, who could want more, the descriptions of the city and the Inn create imagery that only add to Isa’s tale. I enjoyed the story and the character development, but couldn’t get into the back and forth viewpoints of Isa and the ghost. Overall an interesting story with some twists and turns

Four Territories

“What am I?” His eyes continued to glow, but he smiled, “Exactly what you were meant to be. And nothing they could have foreseen.” Enter the Territories where war is brewing, danger grows from the very ground underfoot, and the forgotten return to reclaim what's theirs... Our king is missing and terrifying breeds that disappeared centuries ago have returned to wage war on the Territories. And I am becoming... something and am on the run from an order that would see my kind extinct. The longer I survive, rumors of an unstable half-breed grow, threatening my very existence.

You had me at “Hello Sarcastic”. And anything with humor has my vote. Oh my, some of the one liners in this book makes me fall over laughing. I love the characters. I love the story. It had great world building to it. I really really can’t wait for the next one in the series. Author Lindsay French is now one of my automatic buys without knowing what it is about. The lead character is Veda Grey. She is a half-human sentinel and seal-bearer of the Four Territories. It’s like Mercy Thompson meets Meredith Gentry and Anita Blake.

Book Two in The Four Territories Series
Fated Uprising is coming October 27, 2021

Shadows of Rebellion is an Urban Fantasy novel with adult language, situations, and violence.
