Having to adjust to a new town, school, and friends were not what Aislin Smith had expected after spending the summer locked inside a rehabilitation center. After getting busted for taking drugs to stay awake, her psychiatrist learns the real reason behind Aislin's fear of sleeping—she experiences a phenomenon known as dream telepathy.

Afraid to expose her secret to anyone else, she tries to live an everyday life after being prescribed a sleeping aid with the convenient side effect of having dreamless nights of sleep. But once her chance at peace is taken away, Aislin finds herself in the odd dream of a mysterious girl. She thinks nothing of it until she sees the girl's face again plastered on the front-page news as a missing person in a string of unsolved cases. Struggling to keep her reality together, Aislin decides to take matters into her own hands and find the missing children. If there's one thing she's sure of, it's that the dead don't dream.

Aislin and Raven are in rehab together where they form a friendship. Aislin is there for drug addiction from a sleep disorder. Raven is there for an eating disorder. Upon completion of the program Aislin finds out that they have moved to the same town as Raven lives in. Aislin and her sister, Jess even go to the same school as Raven. Adjusting to life outside of rehab is hard and complicated for both of them. But when kids start disappearing from the area including Jesse’s friend they are then pulled into the mystery.

Robin's Review:

This was an easy read that was a real page turner. The plot was quite intriguing with a mystery “who done it” and an exceptional paranormal power. The characters were young and flawed which made them more honest and relatable. I liked this book and found it fascinating and a must read.

Vancouver Vengeance:
The McKinley Chronicles 2
by John Keillor

After a vicious series of battles, Alberta defeats an overseas aggressor. Abandoned combatants are to be repatriated, but who made their invasion possible?

Calgary's best young warrior's in charge of seeing them away. In seaside Vancouver, a Toronto agent assists him in searching for traitors. the two patriots discover a post-apocalyptic city, divided, where nothing is as it seems.

Zach McKinley, senior security operator and son to soon to be Mayor of Winnipeg, Abraham McKinley, is tasked with moving fifteen hundred unarmed Chinese soldier detainees, progressive nationalist, to Vancouver 12 hours away. Once there, the Vancouver City Council contracted “fishing magnate” Andre Keats to ferry the “progs” back to Vladivostok.

Seems like an easy mission but Zach walks into a political hot mess in Vancouver where there is a union war with businesses that are in support of the city council and want exclusivity on their trades. Progressive nationalists want to replace the current mayors of the four cities and create New Canada, with them in charge. So, there is little “friction fires” everywhere. Add in Rosemary Phillips, the mayor’s girl, is kidnapped by someone with Vancouver connections and Zach has his hands full.
Robin's Review:

Sometimes the dialogue was confusing to figure out who was speaking but it had a good plot. The main characters were thoroughly explained, and I enjoyed their storylines. I believe this is being called a western apocalyptic story and I would have to agree with its action, adventure, and gunslingers its sure to please.

Favorites:

"Hold My Beer" line

A young lady was walking a half dozen ferrets on leashes.

“Did you see him fight firsthand?” The agent nodded. “Characterize his performance.”
“Superhuman. He moved like John Wick.”
“He’s one of those guys the flash strengthened, isn’t he?”
“I’m right here,” said the cowboy.
“He is, Mr. Star.”

“Council assistants waited at intersections in pairs, offering free advice or cannabis, telling smokers the VCC loved them.

“The one beside the site had a working bubble machine, launching soap bubbles from its second-story window”

No Bones About It

He’s a skeleton who used to be a cop.

No Bones About It (Flint & Co Paranormal Investigations Book 1)
by Rachel Ford

He’s a skeleton who used to be a cop. I’m a Freak who used to be a detective. Together, we’re going to find the woman I love.

Technically, the PD hasn’t fired me yet. But when my girlfriend, the star witness in the biggest embezzlement case in a century, went missing, I stepped on some toes. And maybe busted a senior detective’s nose.

He had it coming. He’s hiding something. I’m going to find out what, and I’m going to find my fiancée. But I can’t do it alone.

In a world of magic and undead beings, Normies avoid Freaks like me like the plague. Our magic terrifies them.

But there’s one place I know I can turn to find the help I need: the undead. So here I am, trusting the fate of my career and the love of my life to the bony hands of a 150-year-old undead investigator.

And that's a recipe for disaster. No bones about it.

My Review:

August 13th, 2030, twelve minutes after nine a meteor hit New Boston. It wasn’t the end of the world. It was just the end of life as we knew it. All over the planet, the dead returned to life, or undeath, or whatever they call it. For the most part, and for most people effected, the impact had been positive: gained abilities, a second life, and so on.

That being said Detective Jill Wallace gifted with clairvoyance and fire magic was investigating her missing fiancée, Natalie Lyons with the help of former cop, private investigator and skeleton “Flinty” Jack. But Chief Anders and Detective Sean O’Donnell believe no crime was committed and Detective Wallace is losing her stuff even though Natalie was set to testify in the Senator Vandermeer son’s embezzlement case.

What a delightfully amusing story full of unusual and fun characters. The world building was fantastic going above and beyond the apocalyptic event. In this dystopian world, we find out how things have changed, meet the brilliantly smart, strong characters, and become immersed in their lives. Fabulous throughout, the story had me wanting more by the end.

This is the first book in the series, and I have to say I can’t wait for next book to see where Rachel Ford goes with the story.

Favorite lines:

“I’m a rationalist. A man of science. As I exist in the natural world, my state is not an unnatural or supernatural one.”

“As I exist in the natural world, my state is not an unnatural or supernatural one.”

“I mean, uh…well, I can shoot fireballs from my fingertips. I’m not sure what you would call that, except magic?” “A weaponized exothermal chemical process,” he said, with a shrug of his shoulder blades. “Yeah, that really rolls off the tongue.” “An‘ability,’ if you prefer brevity. That seems to be all the rage these days. But I take your meaning: you’re a Freak.”

“I’d learned long ago to sort problems into two very useful categories, and act accordingly: my problems, and someone else’s problems.” “This was a him problem, not a me problem. So, I could feel free to ignore it.”

“Flinty Jack, you sentient Halloween ornament, what the hell are you doing calling me at this ungodly hour?”

“Keep an eye on that bone bag, will you? He’s a real pain in the ass, but I’d be sorry if he got his irritating self-killed.”

“Flesh Sack, Breather, Skin Bag, Freak, Bone Bag, Normies, Undead and Ferals.”

Taken: A Detective Al Warner Novel
(Detective Al Warner Suspense Book 6)
by George A Bernstein

The corpse of a Miami hooker is discovered in the Everglades, and Detective Al Warner is on it. He discovers other streetwalkers have disappeared, and a simple homicide is now a case of human trafficking. Nicki, a female undercover cop, goes on the streets, hoping to be snatched so she can use a concealed tracking device, but it’s taken from her before she can activate it.

Maggie is offered a lucrative deal as a birth surrogate for a secret, wealthy couple. She’ll live nine months in managed seclusion. Another surrogate there disappears a month before her term. Maggie learns her fetus is a tool of extortion, and fears for her life. She attempts to flee the mansion, but her “hosts” refuse to let her go. Her life is trivial, but they need the child she carries.

Trapped at the bordello on a remote ’Glades Island reached only by airboats, Nicki embarks on daring foray to find and activate the tracker. If she fails, she’ll become a sex slave like the other women imprisoned there, with little hope of rescue. Warner and his team eagerly await Nicki’s signal. Without that, there’s no clue to her location, and no idea of the deadly confrontation that awaits them. Warner is thrust into danger as he seeks to free the sex slaves and also rescue Maggie and a second infant before it’s too late. Lives are on the line, and only Al Warner can save them.

My Review:
This was a story with some of the previous characters from the other books in this series
coming back to help the main character to investigate missing and murdered women.

While being well thought out it was written with a male’s point of view concerning the sex slavery of women. Showing no empathy and or emotion to describe the characters past their looks, left me wanting more. There were a few prejudices that came through in the telling of the story and I was unsure whether they were the authors own prejudices or the characters.

Born to be Wicked: A Snarky Urban Fantasy Series
(Demon Employment Book 1)
by Shade Owens

She's good, she's bad... she's a little bit wicked.

Thousand-year-old succubus Alexis Rayne is a hired killer with a long history of legal name changes, a severe drinking problem, and the ability to bring any man or woman to their knees.

During a recent job, however, she screws up big time; someone sees her, and now she’s forced to track the bastard down to tie up loose ends. During all of this, her boss calls her up to offer her the job of a lifetime. The only problem is this job implicates the vampire mafia. Will Alexis take this suicide mission? If so, it could change everything... Or it could get her killed.

Born to be Wicked, the first book in the Demon Employment series, combines cool magic, unapologetic ass-kicking, and a whole lot of attitude.

My Review:

You had me at “snarky” and boy is it ever!

Alexis Rayne is a Succubus and hired Assassin. Hot right? Cool right? It is until it isn’t. While on a contract she is accidentally spotted during the hit. Knowing this could be a catastrophe Alexis tries to cover her tracks and all evidence.
Meanwhile her boss, Jamieson has another job for her. Its highly classified and maybe even a suicide mission. What can go wrong. Everything.

Born to be Wicked was a ton of fun with a lot of wit and dry humor combined with kick ass action and a little steam thrown in for fun and excitement. The world building was spectacular. The characters are realistic and fantastical at the same time. The plot was strong and fast. paced. I really loved that the main character was a flawed take no shit female. I also enjoyed her diverse friends and even her pets.
I recommend this book and series with 5 stars.

WENDIGO

Wendigo
by David Viergutz

They knew there was something waiting, hiding, watching…

The Wendigo craves flesh and will be a slave to its hunger forever.

James Pope and his wife Rebecca share a son...and a marriage crippled by dysfunction. When James's alcoholism culminates to his arrest, Rebecca promptly moves out and files for divorce. To clear her head, she attempts an ill-prepared adventure in the Rocky Mountains with her son.

A day into the trip, James receives a cryptic text with coordinates to a restricted section of the forest near where his estranged wife and son are visiting.

But when all attempts to contact them fail, James assumes the worst. He springs into action to help his family...and hopefully get a second chance with Rebecca.

Soon, his rescue mission becomes a fight for the family's survival against a horrifying creature of legend, the Wendigo. Now, they can all finally agree on something: They aren't alone in the woods.

The story takes place in the Appalachian Mountains in Felton Forest (Fell or Foul Forest) Michigan on a preserve in a restricted zone. It is written from the point of view of each character.
James Pope and his wife Rebecka and son Jr.
Edgar Wiles and Joe Corrinth trackers.
Arnie House forest ranger and supervisor of the park

Aside from the proofreading errors this was an excellent story that I couldn’t and didn’t put down.

The storyline was new and inventive. It was an easy to read suspenseful telling of an urban myth. Extremely fun and entertaining.

The characters were well thought out and cleverly relatable. My favorite was Jr with his coming-of-age test.

My favorite lines from the book are:

“Lime green pinto screaming bitch, because it’s insufferable whine when it’s started up cold and it’s consistent nagging when it’s brakes squeaked. “

“I’ll tune you up”

“Stop and rob”

This title will be released on October 11, 2021.
