Red Mud River: A Callow and Oakley FBI Thriller

Missiles strike Southern California, school is canceled—and the fate of society lies in the hands of seven kids…

13-year-old Elijah Samuel is normally concerned about his next karate kick, taking down the middle school football rival, Valley…and keeping Gordon—the goblin-looking bully—from hurting his friends. These worries are quickly replaced when his hometown, West Garden, is attacked by Leon Abel, the notorious terrorist leader from the Inferno Sanctum, who has declared war on any country known to have Throngorian—a new metal discovered on Earth with intriguing scientific potential.

Elijah and his friends are evacuated to a safe haven—where they inadvertently become vital to the war efforts along with three rival gang leaders. The three gang leaders must be convinced to work together while Elijah has to persuade his friends to join alongside them to drive Leon Abel’s influence out of town. If not, destruction is imminent, and all lives are on the line.
Robin's Review: Rick, Taylor, Josh, Camyrn, Greg, Trevor, and Elijah, aka the Seven, are Oak Grove Middle School students. They are protected from the local bully Gordon and his crew by Elijah, who is a natural-born leader. As protector over the "Neighborhood," school, and dojo, everything is tense when he is around. Still, soon enough, that would become the least of their worries as terrorist leader Leon Abel and his troops take over parts of California in search of Throngorian. This special metal can be undetectable. It is up to Elijah and the crew to stand up to him, but this is something that they can't do alone. They must team up with some rival gangs and the National Guard in the hopes of pushing back Abel and his troops.
This book has a wide appeal and is easy to read. It follows a coming-of-age story primarily featuring young characters and offers an exciting glimpse into a potential apocalyptic future. With elements from multiple genres, this is an excellent read for any audience.

Favorite Lines and Quotes:
It’s funny how the news people talk for instance.
“This is Anchorman Guy and to my left is Anchorwoman Selena, and we have breaking news,” said Anchorman Guy frantically.
“The Missile Heard By None”,”
“One of the capabilities of Throngorian metal broadcasted here was that anything with Throngorian couldn’t be detected.”
“Leon Abel has also taken a stronger hold in the Inferno Sanctum. Northern Lowry and some parts of Mason have been forced to give their metal to him.”

Robin's Review: Fear City Cop by Pete Thron is a gripping true story about NYPD Sergeant Greg Quinn, who has since retired. Thron takes us on a wild ride filled with compelling twists and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

The writing is realistic and powerful, making it easy to sympathize with Quinn and feel like you're walking in his shoes. In addition, you'll get a glimpse of what it was like to wear the badge in the 70s and 80s and how much has changed since then.

Overall, this thought-provoking book is an exciting and engrossing read that keeps you hooked until the end. So, if you're looking for a page-turner that will keep you up at night, Fear City Cop is the perfect choice.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Thron, a renowned author, at a signing event in Pennsylvania last year.

Manx-iety:
A Collection of Disturbing Stories
by Daemon Manx

The stories in this book were inspired by real-life events. Some are loose interpretations of my nightmares and experiences, and others are dark memoirs.
All were designed to evoke emotion. Longing, fear, remorse, desperation, and of course, anxiety, are a few of the horrors we all face and the ones from which there is often no escape. These stories were written during the most difficult periods in my life. Addiction, incarceration, and depression are the demons of which I speak. Creating this compilation became the tool I used to overcome these demons. This is the product of that struggle. This is Manx-iety.
Robin's Review: I was captivated by the haunting tales woven together in 'Manx-iety,' this mesmerizing collection of short stories by Daemon Manx has elicited an incredible range of emotions, each story delves deep into the human psyche, leaving an indelible mark on the reader's soul. Manx's unparalleled gift for descriptive storytelling brings each character and setting to life in vivid, heart-wrenching detail, immersing readers in a world of dark, haunting nightmares. Pain and suffering are the haunting threads that bind each tale together, creating a chilling tapestry of horror that will leave you breathless. Don't miss this chance to experience the thrill of Manx's dark imagination in one spine-tingling anthology that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

Robin's Review: As the next book in this world which could possibly be called a sequel but also considered a stand-alone Vorodin's Lair, following the Last Keeper, Dameus Alaric, and Princess Addilyn Elspeth of the Vermilion elves. Sacrifice (Apocalypse #4)
by Hayley Anderton and Laura Swift

It's been over a month since the apocalypse began, and there are no signs of help on the way. While some are battling to stay safe and alive, others plot their path to power. With both rotters and humans to contend with, not everyone will survive this cruel new world.
The fallout has arrived.

Chaos has been unleashed.

Sacrifices must be made.

This is the apocalypse.
Robin's Review: I can’t believe how easily these kids have taken to the apocalypse. They just roll with the punches and plan for the long-term future. I love it. Oops not so fast.
I was going to write a long review, but I can't. I need some time to process the ending. I'm so invested in these characters that my heart is broken. This book is a more complicated story than the previous ones. It gets into the dirty, all-too-real side of life. It might not be as cozy, but I still loved it, except well, you know. Read it and you'll understand. Wow. Anyways, this is definitely a book series I recommend reading. And, um, authors, please hurry with the next book. Pretty please?

Here is the reading order so you can catch up:

“Then I guess we do shots of espresso and get on with it.”

“We’re not doing this again,” he hissed. “We don’t need any more newbies trying to get in our good books. Don’t we already have our hands full with Joe?”

“Pain is just weakness leaving the body,”

Mike Vogel is a burned-out, washed-up janitor who turns to alcohol to quiet the voices of his failures. So did his father, and it ended up killing him.

But one night, his drinking leads him to a hellish nightmare where he is forced to confront his demons head-on.
Called by the adventure of a new life, Mike enters a landscape where he must face a new enemy determined to attack his very soul.
Can he survive this onslaught, or will he discover that there is a deeper place than rock bottom?
Robin's Review: Trigger Warning: Alcohol Usage
This story had a lot of fascinating details and implications about the demons associated with alcoholism. It's mind-bending, or should I say mind-blending, and opens up a whole new world. But is it time travel, a parallel universe, or just drunken madness?

I will let you figure that out for yourself. Nonetheless, this is a well-written, thought-provoking read that has stayed on my mind for some time. Mr. Bower has outdone himself with the writing and depth of this story. I highly recommend this book and its author. Mr. Bower did a great job with the writing and depth of this story. With that said, I highly recommend this book and its author.
