Awakened

Spark of the Prophet
Book 1 of 1:
by E. J. Rekab

Demons wreaking havoc on Earth. A secret council run by mysterious angels. A warrior whose dreams could save the world.
While grieving the loss of her father, 19-year-old Alice Griffin wakes up with perfect vision. Odd since she'd worn glasses every day since she was a child. Soon after, she's attacked by a malevolent force and learns not only do demons exist, but that she's been chosen to fight them.
Robin's Review: I loved and enjoyed this story, and I hope there will be more to come—hint hint, wink wink.

Alice, Cole, Jessie, Alondra, Jake, and Misty are at a secret academy training to kill monsters such as demons, vampires, and shifters, to name a few. This is a coming-of-age story with action, adventure, and romance. The main character, Alice, is a complex and capable young woman who develops into a butt-kicking warrior with special powers.

There is a trigger warning for self harm. E. J. Rekab writes it authentically and with respect.

I look forward to anything this author writes and I highly recommend her and her stories.

Robin’s Review of The Black Rogue

The Black Rogue

by Ashley Brion

Rating: 5 out of 5.
The Black Rogue:
A Brooke de Láuront Novel
Book 1 of 1:
by Ashley Brion

Tryniti Brooke de Lauront was formidable, beautiful, and a member of the French royal family.
She hid a dark secret that only her family knew: she was the fearsome pirate The Black Rogue who sailed the seven seas as the most dangerous swashbuckler of her era. When she gets a letter from her uncle, King Louis XVI, that she needs to return home immediately to marry and take over the French throne, her entire world is thrown into chaos.
Robin's Review: The Black Rogue sets sail on a tale of love, betrayal, and sparks are flying more than just cannonfire.
I bought this book at an author meet and greet called Committed at the Hill View Manor. And boy am I glad I did.

I enjoy a strong female character, and Tryniti Brooke is very much one. The Black Rogue is a quick and easy-to-read romance story. It is set around the French Revolution in the 1800s. Tryniti is a princess and has been spoken for in marriage to Sean Reilly, but neither is ready to wed. This story had some twisty turns that kept me reading it all night until I finished it. I even gave it to my Mother, who also enjoyed it.

If it’s not bad enough, this poor guy is a zombie, but he knows aliens are coming to invade Earth. Wow. I sure don’t want to live in this book. It was well written, a quick read, and very enjoyable.

The Zombie Apocalypse Farmers:
A Zombie Apocalypse Call Center Adventure

It was just another day on the farm for Sue and Jared; another day of chores, arguments, and trying to figure out how to keep the farm. Then the zombie apocalypse happened.
Now they’re having to fight off former neighbors, stock up on food and ammo, while trying to stay alive.
Robin's Review:This book is a fun and imaginative take on the zombie apocalypse. It is well-written and a quick read.
To be in a zombie apocalypse and be arguing all the time would be a personal he]] for me. I will have to go back and read this series from the beginning. I recommend this series to anyone looking for an enjoyable apocalypse story.

by J Houser

Robin's Review: I enjoy reading this series. The story is written so descriptively that I fall back in place when I start the next book. The characters have shown depth, growth, and maturity as they progress through their life and events. Throughout this series, J Houser has touched upon some sensitive issues and emotions, and she has done it respectfully and beautifully. It saddens me to see this series end, but it was such a fun and thrilling ride that I have no regrets. I highly recommend her as an author and all of her works.

Robin’s Review of A Creation of Yesterday

A Creation of Yesterday

by D.L Fletcher

Rating: 5 out of 5.
A Creation of Yesterday
D.L Fletcher

Sometimes what was written yesterday can't be changed...With every breath they took, and every decision they made, something was being created for them tomorrow.
With the help Alice sought in protecting her granddaughter Cami years ago, she thought she knew what tomorrow would look like. For Rick, he and his boys thought they were doing a good job protecting Cami. What none of them knew, was the real impact of their decisions until today arrived and tomorrow had passed...This is A Creation of Yesterday...Creation Series Book 1 - A Creation of Tomorrow Book 2 - A Creation of Yesterday
Robin's Review: “A Creation of Yesterday” continues with where “A Creation of Tomorrow” leaves off, Cami’s story and her life since the last book. I will not give away any spoilers because you have to read it with fresh first-time eyes. I will say this is not my normal go to genre of book. It crosses into romance, and of late I’ve grown a little tired of romance. This book has truly shaken me from romance fatigue.

A Creation of Yesterday, is a multi-layered read by crossing different genres and doing it flawlessly. I will say that this is my favorite book of the year. It has complex characters, the plot is definitely unusual, and had a few surprises that I didn’t see coming. I have fallen in love with all of the characters and hope that D.L. Fletcher writes more about them.

This is one of those books that will keep you up all night reading and then cry because you finished it and boy did I cry. I really enjoy this author’s writing style which is a no-frills way with storytelling and is character driven.
I highly recommend this author and all her books and can’t wait for more from her.

Robin’s Review of Crimson: The Red Plague

Crimson: The Red Plague

by R.W. Fisher

Rating: 5 out of 5.
Crimson: The Red Plague
by R.W. Fisher
Learning to survive this fallen world, avoiding the mutilated corpses inhabiting interstate 5 and its surrounding cities, is a lot like surfing. Some learn slowly, first mastering the shallow waves, while others are thrown into the depths and forced to tread water.
Content Warning: This book contains violence, language, sexual assault, and stalking.
Eighteen-year-old Bobby Stratton will never forget his first encounter. He was rubbing the thigh of his longtime girlfriend, scratching up and down her distressed denim. The final minutes of their 4th period biology class was drawing near when the piercing sirens ensued. The door hinges snapped, and without warning, they became submerged in the blood of their peers. They were…eating each other. Entrails splashed upon whiteboards and innards covered their wooden floors like fresh chum.
Bobby peered from beneath his desk, unaware of what led to such mutilation, and was met with the unforgettable sight of his former teacher. His once innocent, blue eyes, now blanketed with a crimson sheet.
Carnage hit their school in a wave. Only the quickest and most adept were able to escape the bloody riptide.
Robin's Review: This is a fast paced thrill ride. In California is 18 year old Bobby Stratton, who leads a group with the help of Sean Reynolds. The group consists of brother, Marcus, friend Dante, girlfriend Chloe Reynolds, and resident Paul Goldean, all trying to survive. The world building is rich and descriptive. The characters were real and relatable. The plot is action packed with lots of zombie gore. I look forward to more from this author.
Favorite Lines: “They had places to be, and the longer they waited to embark on whatever cross-country trip they hoped would get them to that last distant family member known to have a heartbeat, the harder it was to carry on.”
“Jeez, yes. I’m freaking starving. Seriously, it feels like my intestines are dirty dogging each other.”
Interesting Observation: “Their weapons became someone else’s, then someone else’s, then someone else’s, until the ammo went dry, and a hodgepodge of fresh blood stained the trigger.”
“In this world, survival is a never-ending combination of killing, grieving, traveling, and foraging.”
And the best line of someone turning:
“Lisa’s sight bleeds into darkened crimson and she’s gone, emancipated from her earthly shell.”

Robin’s Review of The Assassin of Malcoze

The Assassin of Malcoze

by Bryan Asher

Rating: 5 out of 5.
The Assassin of Malcoze
by Bryan Asher

An aging mercenary struggles to find meaning while chasing a contract many believe is a lie.
The King's daughter toils with a life changing decision to follow her family's path or forge a new one. A young boy possesses a power no one has seen since the Kingdom's greatest nemesis. Behind them sits an assassin lurking in the shadows, who will unwittingly unite them all. A heroic adventure of self-discovery and bravery evoking classic pulp tales like Conan and Elric, with a mix of modern fantasy through its perspective and character development. This is a novel you will race through to finish, and immediately wish to read again. In addition to the incredible cover art, are several beautiful illustrations inside the book from Lithuanian artist Emilis Januškevič.
Robin's Review: The Assassin of Malcoze is a fast paced, well written, and fun to read story of three characters called Malcozéans who are living in the “intercontinents.” I enjoyed each of the characters storylines and how they connected with one another. The world building is rich, descriptive, and different from what I’ve read recently. As a bonus there are some neat illustrations from Lithuanian artist Emilis Januškevič.
I had a tough time putting this book down and yes, I did lose some sleep over it, but so worth it. You can read this as a standalone book or as a series. I highly recommend this book, series, and author.
If you want to delve deeper into this story, then look at Bryan Asher’s podcast on Spotify, where he goes through The Assassin of Malcoze by chapters, like a book club.
It was my pleasure to receive a free copy of this book but that does not in any way affect my opinions in this review of this entertaining story.
